Overview
What respite care at home includes
Respite care gives a family carer a break while the person they care for stays at home. It can be a few hours a week, a few days, or cover for a holiday or hospital stay. Our carers step in to provide the support you would normally give — personal care, meals, medication prompts in line with the care plan, company and keeping routines going — so there is as little disruption as possible for the person being cared for.
Who this is for
Who this tends to suit
- Family carers who need regular time for themselves to rest and recharge
- Carers going on holiday, attending a family event or going into hospital
- Families covering a gap while longer-term care is being arranged
- People who would find a short stay in a care home unsettling
How quickly we can help
How we arrange respite care
Tell us when you need cover and what you normally do. We arrange a free assessment, ideally while you are still there, so we can learn the routines that matter and introduce the carers before you step away. Planned respite is easiest to arrange with some notice; if you need cover urgently because of illness or an emergency, call us and we will be honest about what we can put in place.

Worth knowing
Respite often leads to regular home care visits, and for people living with dementia, our dementia care page explains how we adapt support. The council may help fund breaks — see our costs and funding guide.
